Space

The importance of space satellites has increased dramatically in recent decades, both in terms of quality and number, and for both civil and military purposes. A conflict fought in space could not only cause severe economic damage, but also render space unusable for civilian purposes for decades. However, given the vastness of space and the dual-use nature of most communications and reconnaissance satellites, arms control measures involving space are difficult to implement. On the other hand, the use of satellites to verify arms control agreements or detect destabilizing behavior has provided reliable information for decades.
