Fighter Jets for Ukraine and the Risk of Escalation: A Reality Check

Three F-16 fighter jets on an airfield
PRIF Blog by Frank Kuhn (in German)

After several NATO countries agreed to supply Ukraine with tanks after months of debate, the Ukrainian government is intensifying its demands for Western-designed fighter aircraft. However, even with a few Western jets, Ukraine would hardly be able to destroy the powerful Russian air defense systems. In addition, and more importantly, Western fighter jets place enormous demands on infrastructure and training. A decision to supply them would be primarily a political signal of long-term support for the country. At this stage, it would have no impact on the battlefield.
