In view of the use of chemical weapons, new developments in biotechnology and information technology, and the threat of nuclear weapons, nuclear, biological, chemical, and information technology disarmament and arms control face major challenges. This makes findings from scientific and technical disciplines enormously important for research on war and peace, armament, and disarmament. They support political processes of war prevention, disarmament, and confidence-building through analyses of the characteristics, consequences, and control options of new types of weapons and technologies.
