Since the end of the Cold War, the United States has significantly reduced the size of its nuclear arsenal. However, a dramatic change of course is looming ahead of the US election in 2024: while Russia is threatening to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, China and North Korea are steadily expanding their nuclear arsenals. If the three states continue to show no interest in arms control negotiations with Washington, the United States could therefore also increase its nuclear arsenal for the first time in decades - regardless of who wins the election. However, a Democratic administration would in all likelihood take a much more measured approach than a Republican government.
