Malte Göttsche, Luis Pazos Clemens and Yan-Jie Schnellbach visited the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB), in Braunschweig on Monday (7th April).
The team met with the the institute's Ionizing Radiation division and Yan-Jie Schnellbach gave a talk on the activities of the Science for Nuclear Diplomacy group at CNTR, titled “Mess- und Detektionsmethoden für die nukleare Verifikation” (Measurement and Detection Methods for Nuclear Verification), illustrating the need for verification, describing current techniques, highlighting challenges posed by new developments in the nuclear industry and presenting current verification-related research at the PRIF and TU Darmstadt. The visit concluded with an extensive laboratory tour through the division's test facilities, including the PIAF accelerator facility, the open-air laboratory for measuring background radiation and the division's radiochemical laboratory.
The PTB is Germany's national metrology institute with approx. 2100 staff members and is in charge of the housing the national standards, providing the legal time and disseminating SI units in Germany as well as providing accurate calibration and measurement services.
