Biotechnology is usually discussed in the context of health, agriculture, environmental protection, and industrial innovation. But it has always had a security dimension. The same knowledge that helps societies understand pathogens, develop vaccines, or create useful proteins can also be relevant for developing biological weapons. This 'dual-use' nature isn’t new. What is changing, however, are the speed, scale, and accessibility of biological design – not least due to the use of AI. How can we effectively tackle these challenges?
