Advances in AI and synthetic biology are opening up unprecedented possibilities for medical research, such as in the development of new treatment approaches using so-called phage therapy. At the same time, questions arise:

• Do these innovative technologies facilitate misuse?
• What safety measures are necessary to limit #dual-use risks?

These and other questions will be addressed at the Leopoldina Lecture in collaboration with the Volkswagen Foundation at Herrenhausen Palace, Hanover. The event will focus on the opportunities and risks associated with AI-assisted development and synthetic production of microorganisms or viruses.
