In the face of the Russian war in Ukraine and growing tensions with China, the prospects for arms control seem bleak. But not all arms control efforts are doomed to failure. Even if further disarmament is unlikely at present, everything should be done to maintain strategic stability, reduce escalation risks, prevent an arms race and contain proliferation. This requires a reorientation of arms control policy and its integration into security and defence policy. At the same time a new danger must be countered: disinformation, because it can undermine arms control and permanently prevent cooperation.
